The third-person action strategy game Sniper Elite emphasizes sniping as its primary gameplay mechanic. The player assumes the role of an American agent working for the OSS (the organization that would later become the CIA) and is stationed in Berlin at the end of World War II. The player’s mission is to stop the Russian troops from gaining access to the research that Germany had been conducting into developing nuclear weapons. When playing as an elite sniper, the style is much less about running and gunning and more about finding good positions, lining up shots, and eliminating the opposition before they even have a chance to figure out where you are. The single-player campaign is divided into 28 different missions in and around Berlin. When lining up shots, players employ stealth strategies, and environmental factors such as wind and background noise can be important considerations. When a player makes an incredibly accurate shot, they are rewarded with a “bullet cam,” which retraces the bullet’s path in slow motion as it travels from the gun barrel to the target. Local two-player cooperative play between you and a friend is an option in this game, and players can revive one another.
