The city of Bikini Bottom is producing an anniversary show of The New Adventures of Mermaid Man & Barnacle Boy in the home console versions of the game, in which the titular SpongeBob wishes to play the starring role. [2] SpongeBob must compete with other series characters such as Patrick Star, Sandy Cheeks, Squidward Tentacles, Mr. Krabs, and Sheldon J. Plankton to impress talent scouts and land the lead role of the villain. [3] The game includes 30 unique minigames (“auditions”) with varying play styles and objectives, with the common goal of earning the most points. Each minigame is themed after a specific area or location in Bikini Bottom. Each site comes with three minigames. There are 8 locations with 24 minigames to play through story mode. The remaining six are optional unlockables. A driving test, in which the goal is to complete the first three driving courses; a jailbreak, in which the goal is to free as many prison inmates as possible without being caught; and a rhythm minigame, in which the goal is to match the short and long musical notes that travel toward a marker. Minigames are divided into two types: free-for-all, in which the player competes against the other three characters, and 2 vs. 2, in which the player teams up with the first computer-controlled character that the player selects (or the second player) against the other two computer-controlled characters. SpongeBob SquarePants, Squidward Tentacles, Sandy Cheeks, Plankton, Patrick Star, and Mr. Krabs are the six playable characters in the game. A character and three (or two in 2-player mode) CPU characters must be selected before the player can play a minigame. All characters are available right away and have equal abilities; they do not have an advantage over one another. However, the player can adjust the difficulty of controlling the character in three different ways (Easy, Medium, and Hard) and the artificial intelligence of the computer characters in three different ways (Silly, Norm, Smart).
