Perhaps one of the most recent shooting franchises to hit Japanese arcades and home consoles is the Castle of Shikigami series. The Wii’s debut game, Castle of Shikigami III, had its localization for North America done by Aksys. It’s a nice addition to the Wii’s shooter collection because it combines attractiveness, humor, and difficult gameplay.
There is a backstory involving a castle that appears in the sky over contemporary Tokyo and a group of adventurers of different stripes traveling there for various reasons, but it isn’t really significant and doesn’t get mentioned anywhere in the game (there are manga and novels based on the games if you’re interested). A succession of ten bosses is defeated over the course of five stages by the player’s choice of one of ten characters.
