Castle of Illusion was a 16-bit side-scrolling platform game, and those who played the first version will remember it fondly. Since its original release on the SEGA Genesis, this reimagined version of the game maintains the same fundamental layout, but every aspect of the gameplay has been updated. Movement is still done in a two-dimensional plane, with the exception of the three-dimensional castle that serves as the game’s overworld, but the environments and characters no longer have the appearance of being flat objects that are crushed up against one another. The character models have a smooth and rounded appearance, which is reminiscent of the art style seen in more recent Epic Mickey video games. The locations are extremely realistic, and there is a real sense of depth to them; for example, if you travel through one area, certain creatures will attack you from another dimension. In addition to adversaries, there are also things that fall from the backdrop onto your path. Some of these objects even continue onward off the screen, giving the impression that they are in three dimensions.
