Juan Aguacate used to be a wrestler, but he lives in a peaceful community in Mexico these days. At least until Carlos Calaca, the emperor of the dead world, abducts the mayor’s daughter, and his zombie monsters begin to take over the living world. Juan has no hope of survival and is rapidly eliminated from the game; nevertheless, he is saved from certain death when he discovers a mystical wrestling mask in the undead realm that grants him superhuman abilities. It stands to reason that his new mission will need him to defeat Calaca and come to the aid of the helpless maiden. The game takes place in a funny tone and makes several allusions to popular culture.

Guacamelee! is a platforming game that scrolls to the side and features connected levels. The gameplay is similar to Metroidvania, in which Juan earns improvements over time that allow him to overcome challenges and go to new locations. Ultimately, he achieves the powers that will enable him to traverse the entire map and arrive at his destination. The gameplay significantly emphasizes platforming, an integral part of it, and engaging in close-quarters battles with the various foes. Because many enemies can be defeated using multiple strategies, it is necessary to put each upgrade to use in both the exploration and fighting systems. Some examples of skills include making a dodge roll, morphing into a chicken, or switching between the living world and the dead world, which alters the visuals, platforms, and foes.

The multiplayer mode enables two players to work together on the same screen. If there is excessive space between the players, and one of them exits the screen, the character will be transferred back. Tostada, the female, is the second character in the story.
