The novel Knight’s Contract is set in a fictitious Europe during the Middle Ages. It has elements of dark fantasy, such as witchcraft, magic, and monsters from other worlds, and it takes place in this Europe. The majority of people in society hold a superstitious hatred toward witches. Consequently, people employ those who specialize in hunting and killing witches. The game’s protagonist is Heinrich Hofmann, an experienced witch executioner afflicted by a curse. The game’s protagonist is also a young woman named Gretchen, the reincarnation of a witch Heinrich executed at the behest of Dr. Faust. The act of Gretchen bestowing the curse of immortality upon Heinrich may at first appear to be an act of retaliation for her execution. At the same time, the game’s primary adversary, Dr. Faust, is responsible for creating armies of monsters that spread fear throughout the planet. Gretchen and her companions, witches, perished due to the experiments carried out by the crazed scientist. Gretchen decides to tackle the threat openly by allying herself with the damned executioner, Heinrich, hoping she can save humanity. To break the curse and triumph over Dr. Faust, the now-immortal Heinrich is compelled to save the life of the mortal Gretchen.
