Because Darkseid and Shao Kahn were defeated in their realities simultaneously, a fluke event involving a portal resulted in the creation of a new creature called Dark Kahn. This new entity is more evil and powerful than its predecessors and incorporates the worst aspects of both universes.
Dark Kahn wants to combine the DC and Mortal Kombat universes into a single reality. Because of this, heroes and villains alike are forced to form unlikely alliances to keep the two universes’ facts separate. “The Rage” is a force that causes a person to lose their mind and be consumed by aggression.
The DC Comics universe and the Mortal Kombat universe are represented in this fighting game in the style of an arcade by ten champions from each realm and one “boss” character, for a total of twenty-two fighters. The gameplay is analogous to that of the 2D Mortal Kombat games (with some 3D aspects thrown in), with a greater emphasis placed on the use of special moves as opposed to the intricate combos seen in the three games that came before it (Deadly Alliance, Deception, and Armageddon).
Klose Kombat, Freefall Kombat, and “Test Your Might” use the environment as a mini-game style scenario to inflict stylized and extensive damage on an opponent. Additionally, a mode called “Rage” transforms standard moves into a devastating opportunity to crush your opponent. These new fighting modes can be found within the gameplay. Players engage in combat in various environments, including Gotham City, Metropolis, the Shaolin Temples, and Hell on Earthrealm.
As with other Mortal Kombat video games, fatalities are still a part of the gameplay for both the Kombatants and the villains. However, they have been toned down to conform to the DC standards, which require that heroes like Superman and Batman adhere to a moral code prohibiting them from murdering their opponents. As a direct consequence, the heroes of DC Comics engage in “Heroic Brutalities,” which render their adversary incapable of further action.
Players also have the option to engage in online play, where they can take their battles online for rated matches, play against a friend, or compete against another player online in tournaments.
