The player, who controls a mysterious figure that has inherited the legacy of the evil, long-dead Overlord, emerges, nearly dead, from the rubble of the ancient Overlord’s Dark Tower. This tower was once the residence of the Overlord. Only your choices will determine whether or not you will become the new all-powerful Overlord; it all comes down to how much of a devil you want to be in order to succeed… bad or evil! The game is a warped parody of traditional fantasy settings and characters, and it is filled with a lot of dark humor and irony. Players are entirely submerged in the experience. Overlord’s most significant advance includes a wide variety of mischievous creatures known as minions. They have the misguided belief that you are the reincarnation of the previous Overlord, and as a result, they will use their unique abilities to retrieve, fight, and even die for you. The player actively controls a horde of these gremlin-like critters throughout the game, and these gremlin-like critters follow your every direction regardless of how unjust or, for the minions, how life-threatening it may be.
