After publishing the Street Sk8er series in the past, skate. Is Electronic Arts’ first in-house-developed skateboarding game? Players can design their character and move it around the fictional town of San Vanelona. To become a top skater, players must participate in skating challenges marked on the map to gain notoriety, attract sponsors, and have their tricks photographed or filmed. Spots can be “owned” by performing well, and there are also jam sessions and death races against other skaters. Completing challenges earns you new equipment, clothing, characters, and new challenges. There are two paths to take: Skateboard Mag and Trasher to get coverage in various magazines. The Skateboard Mag path follows a more formal career skater format, with progression based on photo moments, demos, contests, and filming parts. The Thrasher path is more anti-authority, with downhill races and tampering with security. By completing either way, the player gains access to the Xgames and the mega-ramp, a massive ramp based on a real construction. Unlike in the Tony Hawk series, movement and tricks are entirely controlled by analog sticks. Skate. The reel and the in-game replay editor allow players to go back in time and review their last 15-25 seconds of gameplay from multiple perspectives. That footage can also be directly uploaded to the skate.reel website, where players can vote for their favorite clips. The game allows for online play, with several challenges duplicated from the offline game and some new online modes. The game includes several famous skaters whose appearance was licensed.
