Sonic the Fighters

Sonic Championship is a 3D fighting game featuring Sonic the Hedgehog characters. The backstory is that Doctor Eggman created Death Egg II, a new version of his facility from previous games. Stopping him requires Chaos Emeralds, and various characters, including Sonic the Hedgehog and Miles “Tails” Prower, to compete in a fighting tournament to collect them. There are eight playable characters (nine in later console releases) and two bosses (Metal Sonic and Doctor Eggman). The gameplay is typical mainly for a versus fighter; it’s a one-on-one fight with a best two-out-of-three scoring system. The players use jumps, punches, kicks, and special weapons. Bean the Dynamite, a duck-like character who makes his debut in the Sonic universe, employs bombs. The use of a limited supply of barriers is used to block. However, the real action is depicted comically, as one would expect from a Sonic game. A round is won when a player depletes an opponent’s health unless the timer runs out, in which case the character with the most energy remaining wins. The environments are 3D closed arenas, but the gameplay is primarily 2D, with only a few sidestep maneuvers allowed.
