Star Trek is a cooperative action game based on the 2009 reboot of the franchise, released as a tie-in with the sequel film Star Trek Into Darkness. The game’s events occur between the two movies based on the same canon. Players can choose between Captain James T. Kirk and his second in command, Commander Spock. The entire game is co-op, with an AI player or a friend playing the character you do not control. Characters can only be switched between chapters while playing alone, not during gameplay. Another player supports a drop-in mechanic. The game’s antagonist is the Gorn, an evil reptilian race that attacks a New Vulcan colony through a rift in space. The game is designed with a cooperative mindset, with players complementing each other’s skill sets. Captain Kirk is a more typical shooter, armed with a phaser with a stun setting, while Commander Spock is a more stealth-based character, armed with a couple of abilities and a gun with a freeze setting. The player gains experience by scanning objects, hacking, and discovering audio logs as they progress through the game. Experience points are used to unlock new abilities for their respective weapons. The tricorder has various shooting options, and the characters can rewire turrets and hack flying drones. The two characters can assist one another by boosting shields and weapons. There is a space battle with turrets and many platforming sections in addition to the corridor-based shooting gameplay. Certain stages are set in space, where characters must avoid debris, and one level includes underwater areas.
