This particular iteration of the popular arcade game Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo is called Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo HD Remix. The sprites of the characters and the backdrops have been cleaned up, and each gem now has an aesthetic quality corresponding to the quality of its element.
The gameplay is essentially the same as in the first game; players still compete against one another to drop gems of varying colors into a container resembling Tetris as quickly as they can in groups of two. In addition, the player is given glowing spheres of various colors; if they set one of these orbs next to a gem of the same color, the orb and all gems of the same color splinter, and any rocks higher up fall. The game’s objective for the player is to ensure that this occurs several times for each block placed, resulting in “combos.” The more powerful the combo, the greater the number of Counter Gems, which are gems with timers that are tossed into the opponent’s bin. If a player sets many jewels of the same hue in a square or rectangular sequence, those gems will combine to form a giant single rock, increasing the number of Counter Gems that drop on the opponent’s field. Occasionally, a player may also receive a diamond. Placing this on a colored gem will remove all gems of that hue from the player’s bin, thereby boosting the number of possible combos.
In a manner analogous to Super Puzzle Fighter II X for Matching Service, HD Remix features several gameplay variations:X-Mode:* Identical to the original arcade mode.
In Y-Mode, diamonds of the same hue will shatter as soon as there are three of them lined in any direction across, down, or diagonally.
Z-Mode is a gameplay mode in which gems rise from the bottom of the bin, and the player manipulates a cursor that is 2×2 in size to rotate the gems and generate combos.
X’-Mode, often known as X Dash-Mode, is a new feature exclusive to HD Remix that offers a version of the game that is better balanced overall. The distinctive block patterns of many characters have been tweaked to make the playing field more even.
