On June 28, 1914, Germany declared war on Russia in response to the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, which drew the rest of Europe into the struggle already raging in other parts of the world. Families were torn apart, and the enemy cut many fathers and sons down in combat or succumbed to diseases in the trenches. The Great Conflict inspired the game, which tells the experiences of numerous people whose terrible destinies become entwined as the conflict drags on. The game was inspired by letters exchanged during the war.
The player can choose to play as one of four different characters. Karl, one of the many Germans who were deported from France, is compelled to enlist in the German army, which causes him to be separated from his wife Marie and son Victor. At the same time, Marie’s father, Emile, is conscripted into the French army. Anna is a student from Belgium looking for her father, and Freddie is a volunteer from the United States who doesn’t appear to have anything to lose. The characters will also receive assistance from Walt, the dog, on various occasions throughout the story.
In terms of its gameplay is primarily a combination of a side-scrolling adventure game featuring a significant number of puzzles and a plain action game. The player takes control of one of the characters and uses their unique skills to navigate through a series of challenges as part of an “adventure” phase. The puzzles involve manipulating objects, assisting individuals in need, slipping past guards or opponents, etc. There are a variety of action scenarios, some of which include dodging enemy bombs, while others involve driving a tank in the middle of fierce combat.
