Two divine entities ruled the universe peacefully and harmoniously at the beginning of time. But one day, the seeds of conflict fell from the sky, and the entity known as The Dark attempted to seize total power. The Light and The Dark fought fiercely, but The Light could not defeat The Dark and bring the chaos to a halt. They were inextricably linked, so The Light realized that the only way to stop The Dark was to imprison him and himself in two cursed artifacts. Each guard the artifact containing the other’s powers, and everything appears okay. At least until Ayumi, an egocentric treasure hunter, discovers the map to the hidden temple where the artifacts are guarded. In her greed, she disregards The Light’s warnings, touches the artifact, and thus brings The Curse upon herself. It infiltrates her body, condemning her to pain and suffering. But all is not lost. The Curse does not yet have complete control over her. Regardless, Ayumi continues her search for the second artifact. But not out of greed, but to battle, The Dark, confine its powers once more and thus rid herself of The Curse. The journey is difficult as the player takes control of Ayumi and guides her through the levels by looking over her shoulder. The return of The Dark spawned a slew of new foes on the island. But, as a seasoned treasure hunter, Ayumi isn’t helpless. With her gun blades in hand, she mows through the enemies as Dante does in the Devil May Cry series until the entrance to the next level unlocks; each defeated enemy drops one or more souls, which Ayumi uses to purchase additional skills, spells, and items that allow her to cast fireballs at her enemies or buy more powerful bullets for her gunblades. This is especially important because each enemy and boss has a unique weakness. The phantoms, for example, are immune to physical damage, but hitting them with a fireball or fire-induced blades will quickly destroy them. There are also artifacts scattered around the temple that have been broken into three pieces. If Ayumi finds all three, she reunites them and gains either a melee, pistol, or airstrike upgrade, which increases her damage and allows her to use more powerful combos.
