Midway Games and Warner Bros. Games combined Mortal Kombat and the fictional world of DC Comics to create Mortal Kombat vs. DC Realm, a fighting video game. The game features characters from both series and was launched on November 16, 2008. Comic authors Jimmy Palmiotti and Justin Gray created the tale. Despite being a crossover, the game is considered the eighth episode in the core Mortal Kombat series, as seen by the designation of the tenth entry, Mortal Kombat X. The game begins after Raiden, Earthrealm’s god of thunder, and Superman, Earth’s guardian, resist attacks from both planets. A simultaneous attack by Raiden and Superman in their respective universes causes the Mortal Kombat and DC villains, Shao Kahn and Darkseid, to merge, resulting in the creation of Dark Kahn, whose mere existence causes the two universes to begin connecting; if allowed to continue, it will destroy both. Characters from both universes’ strength levels start to vary, becoming stronger or weaker. Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe was created using Epic Games’ Unreal Engine 3 and is available for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. It is the first Mortal Kombat game explicitly designed for seventh-generation video game platforms. Most critics thought that Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe was fun and effectively used its DC Universe license. However, the game’s lack of unlockable features compared to previous Mortal Kombat sequels and toned-down finishing techniques drew some criticism.
