Volition and THQ released Saints Row: The Third, an open-world action-adventure video game in 2011. It is the third installment in the Saints Row franchise. In single-player and cooperative play, the player-character leads the Third Street Saints gang in a turf war against three other gangs, employing a range of weaponry and vehicles. The series, particularly this title, is noted for its bizarre settings and amusing gameplay. It was published on November 15, 2011, for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360, and eventually on other platforms in other countries. By late 2008, game production had begun. The previous Saints Row crew had a significant staff turnover, with one-fifth of the final 100-person workforce having worked on a prior entry in the series. They intended to strengthen the franchise by providing a consistent tone, which they found in films like Hot Fuzz and the game’s distinctive sex toy bat. The Havok physics engine was used to create Saints Row: The Third. According to Metacritic, a video game review score aggregator, the game earned “generally favorable” reviews. Reviewers commended its customizing choices and remarked on its general zaniness. Others said the game perfected the Saints Row model, while critics thought the atmosphere was dull and the comedy occasionally fell flat. It received flawless reviews from GamesRadar and G4 and was nominated for Best Narrative at the 2012 Game Developers Conference. A year after the original release, a full version featuring the three downloadable content packs was published, and the planned Enter the Dominatrix addition became the game’s successor, Saints Row IV.
