As a part of the Force Unleashed initiative, LucasArts created the action-adventure video game Star Wars: The Force Unleashed. It was first released on the PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3, Wii, and Xbox 360 consoles, as well as iOS, second-generation N-Gage, Nintendo DS, PlayStation Portable, and Java-enabled mobile phones. The game was launched on September 16, 2008, in North America, on September 17, 2008, in Australia and Southeast Asia, and on September 19, 2008, in Europe. LucasArts has made downloadable content available for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 gaming platforms. In November 2009, the game’s Ultimate Sith Edition, which included all previously published extended material, was released for Mac OS and Microsoft Windows. The project bridges the first two Star Wars trilogies, serving as the genesis tale for the unified Rebel Alliance and the Galactic Civil War shown in the Original Trilogy. The game adds a new protagonist, “Starkiller,” as Darth Vader’s secret apprentice, who is charged with hunting down Jedi while killing rebels and Imperials equally to conceal his presence from the Emperor, but who gradually begins to redeem himself to the good side of the Force. The Force Unleashed mainly received favorable reviews, complimenting it for its engaging plot, solid physics, beautiful visuals, and soundtrack, but some critical reviews mentioned tiresome gameplay. Despite this, the game was a smash hit in the United States and Australia, selling over a million copies in its first month. The play has sold over seven million copies since February 2010, making it the fastest-selling Star Wars video game. Star Wars: The Force Unleashed II, the sequel, was published in October 2010.
