The 16-year-old hero’s coming-of-age ceremony is concluded by his victorious return from a forest filled with monsters. The hero’s happiness is short-lived, though, as a young village girl is discovered to be suffering from the enigmatic disease known as “crystal sickness.” The hero leaves the remote community for the first time, determined to find the cure, only to find that crystals are now little more than historical artifacts.
