The Assassin’s Creed III video game is a third-person, open-world, historical action-adventure game focusing primarily on stealth. Even though it is numbered lower, this is the fifth main game in the Assassin’s Creed series and a direct successor to the game that came before it, Revelations. After the events of the last game in the series, the protagonist of the series, Desmond Miles, together with his father William and the two companions Rebecca and Shaun, journeys to a cave in New York where they have discovered a temple that was built by the people who were a part of the First Civilization. By utilizing the Apple of Eden, Desmond can make a significant portion of the apparatus operational. It was constructed to protect the Earth from a solar flare that poses an existential threat to the world. On the other hand, Desmond enters into a trance-like state and is then transported inside the Animus, a virtual reality machine that allows him to experience his ancestral memories. He will use Animus to find the answers to the questions posed by the warning given by the First Civilization, as well as the threat posed by the Knight Templars and the modern-day company they control, Abstergo Industries.
After starting in the contemporary day, most of the game takes place in Colonial America, before, during, and after the events of the American Revolution, which occurred between 1753 and 1783. Ratonhnhaké:ton, sometimes known as Connor, is a member of the Mohawk tribe and serves as the primary protagonist of this game. Because the story initially follows his father, a Londoner named Haytham Kenway, who relocates to the United States of America after eliminating an assassin in the London Opera, he is not introduced until a considerable amount of time has passed. The gameplay of the opera murder, the travel on the boat, and the landing in Boston are all experienced by the player. Haytham belongs to the Templar order. He sneaked inside the opera theater and took a key. Now, he and five other men who support his cause are trying to find the warehouse where the key to the medallion opens. Because he participates in other community activities, he is introduced to the Mohawk lady Kaniehti: io (Ziio), who later becomes pregnant and gives birth to Connor. After that, the player is allowed to play through the next 30 years of Connor’s life, beginning with his youth with the Mohawk tribe and continuing through his training to become an assassin after the Templars, under his father’s command, invade his town. After then, the conflict between the Assassins and the Templars is incorporated into the American Revolution.
The open-world setting is immediately available as soon as Haytham lands in Boston. In the end, the player will also have the opportunity to explore New York, the Mohawk village, a significant portion of the American Colonial Frontier, various settlements including Lexington, Concord, and Charlestown, a brief visit to Philadelphia, and the entire Eastern seaboard. At the same time, Connor commands the warship Aquila during naval missions. Along the route, you’ll encounter a wide variety of historical people, and the Animus database will include all the information about the characters and locales written in a hilarious tone. It is possible to rapidly replay sections of the game because practically everything takes place in a virtual reality setting.
Additionally, the game frequently displays flaws that seem like wireframes to remind players that they are only experiencing a simulation. However, there are additional quests with Desmond in the present-day world. These quests need him to acquire power sources from countries like Italy and Brazil to unlock the temple gate.
In addition to the primary storyline, a variety of side quests and chores can be discovered via adventuring across the landscape. The combat system uses close-quarters and long-range weapons, and various actions are available to disarm, attack, parry, fire, and assassinate, depending on the gun. The new counterattacks are performed slowly to create more space for the main onslaught. The series introduces a new type of weapon, ranged weapons, such as muskets and rifles, which need significant time to reload. The free-running movement to climb practically any building or obstacle has been updated so that the different activities can be tied into a seamless motion by holding down a single button or key. Previously, the player had to hit multiple buttons or keys individually. However, it is still possible to take a new path at any time by deviating from the current one through different actions. Hiding locations have been expanded to incorporate movable vehicles like haystacks in wagons, which can be used to sneak up on opponents. Soldiers can disguise themselves, but officers cannot be duped this way. There is a three-tiered system of notoriety, and one of the requirements for becoming incognito is to flee away and hide. Other requirements include pulling down wanted posters and paying town criers bribes. Every computer-controlled character has their habits, and these routines are now affected by the weather as well, with a day-and-night cycle and a cycle based on the seasons.
Alongside the gameplay carried over from the preceding games, this installment adds the capability of hunting and trapping wild animals to sell their skins. Building up the community of Davenport Homestead can take up a significant amount of time throughout the game. It is possible to entice non-player characters known as artisans to settle in the area around the Homestead, beginning with just a single building. This provides access to raw resources and facilities that can be utilized in crafting. When this happens, a local economy is formed, and the player can either sell their wares via land caravans or sea convoys to contribute to this economy. Visual indicators of progress in the Homestead include the appearance of additional individuals working and constructing new buildings. Following the successful completion of an assignment for an Artisan, the Artisan will receive an upgrade, which will result in improved equipment and weapons. Earning money on Homestead can be done through the Homestead economy or other means, such as finding hidden chests, selling hunting spoils, looting other players, or picking pockets. In addition, tools exist to pick locks, accessed through a brief and interactive process. The naval campaigns on the Eastern seaboard play an additional role that is notably distinct from the others. Connor is tasked with navigating the ship in full naval combat while utilizing a variety of ship improvements, including sails, cover, and cannons, which become accessible throughout the game. Bowls, Morris, and Fanorona are three historical board games included in the game and can be played anywhere, whether on the ship, in the cities, or at the Homestead.
Participating in the Hunting, Brawling, and Robbing Club activities will allow you to access more challenges. Each of these provides optional goals across a variety of stages. Other objectives require finding optional trinkets, collecting almanac pages and feathers, delivering messages, completing assassination contracts, synchronizing viewpoints, and doing various other tasks. Through liberating districts, each of the three significant environments (Boston, Frontier, and New York) must be freed from the control of the Templar organization. Taxes on Homestead convoys are lowered after Liberation takes effect. Hiring up to six people to maintain a presence is possible, and their abilities (such as assassination, bodyguard, and so on) can be utilized whenever required. The majority of the time, companions can also be taught fundamental commands. They can be dispatched to other states when they are no longer needed, where they will independently carry out missions and return a significant amount of money and other incentives. Their capabilities improve due to completing these quests, reducing the difficulty of achieving success. Some strongholds can be taken over to expel opposing nations in each of the three zones.
The Abstergo Industries entertainment product “Multiplayer” features 12 unique game modes and may be played by multiple players simultaneously. In addition to the standard options, there is a co-op mode called Wolfpack. In this mode, up to four players can collaborate to go through 25 stages and eliminate NPCs within a set amount of time. Another option is the Domination team mode, with players using the Animus game console to seize control of sections of a digital battlefield and defend their territory from the opposing group.
Players of the Wii U version can quickly equip multiple weapons using the gamepad, which also displays the in-game map. Players can also use the gamepad to see the in-game map.
