The protagonist of “Eternal Sonata” is based on a genuine historical figure: Frédéric Chopin, a great Polish composer who lived in the 19th century. At the beginning of the game, Chopin is on his deathbed when he has a bizarre dream in which he is transported into a fantasy world where places and people have names that sound like pieces of music. In Chopin’s universe, all magicians are said to die early, so when she meets a girl named Polka, she reveals that she is a sorceress fleeing from her fate. They recruit more people to help them in their mission to overthrow a villainous aristocrat. The narrative draws connections between Chopin’s waking life and the events in his dreams.
The game is designed in the style of Japanese role-playing games (RPGs), with a story that progresses linearly and focuses on the characters and graphics that are influenced by anime. The gameplay blends numerous aspects of traditional tactical turn-based battles, real-time brawling, and other forms of warfare. Your party has a certain amount of time for a round, during which you can move a character around the battlefield and carry out actions, the duration of which varies based on the impact the movement will have. Light is a significant factor in combat because characters’ attacks and spells change depending on whether or not they are standing in the light or the shadows.
The game’s musical score is comprised of pieces composed by Frederic Chopin.
