The action game Folklore also features some role-playing game–style character customization. There are two primary characters in this story. One of the characters is a young woman named Ellen, who is looking for the truth about her past. The second character is a man named Keats, who works as a journalist for a magazine devoted to the occult and is looking into a probable murder. The events of the story take place in the present day.

Ellen is driven to an Irish village called Doolin by a message from her deceased mother, and Keats is enticed there after getting a distressing phone call. Once there, they hear rumors that the living and the dead may communicate. They go to the netherworld during the game and face the faeries and monsters known as “Folk.”

Ellen and Keats can earn new talents for combat by absorbing the ids of other players during fights. In most cases, this is accomplished by using timed motions of the motion-sensing controller.

Because four different people can be set to other controller buttons, the gameplay can be made to be as fast-paced as an action game while still allowing for some degree of personalization. The player can follow either Keats’ or Ellen’s plot throughout the game. There are seven realms, each predicated on a unique conception of life after death.
