The role-playing video game Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning takes place in the fictional world of Amalur, which is split up into several different kingdoms. When Gadflow, the new king of the Winter Court of the mythical Faelands kingdom, led his followers, the Tuatha Deohn, on a campaign to wage war against the young races of Amalur, the world was once at peace. He believes an entirely new god known as Tirnoch will soon emerge in the East. The other races have little chance of winning the fight because the Fae can resurrect even after they have died. From a third-person perspective, the player takes control of the main character, who is referred to as Fateless One. After ten years of fighting, they are killed in combat and buried in a mass grave. The gender of the character can be established after the introduction. However, he comes to and learns that he was brought back to life by the gnomish scientist Fomorous Hugues through the utilization of a trial Well of Souls. Because he has no recollection of his past, he is forced to abandon the facility when attacked by the Tuatha Deohn. After he has returned to the earth, he finds out from the Fateweaver Agarth that he is the only one who has been able to avoid fate, which is the predestination to which all individuals are condemned. His primary objective is to track down Hugues so that he may learn more about the experiment, but as they search for him, they soon become entangled in a broader plot that involves Gadflow, his henchmen, and the new deity.
Following the brief introduction, the player will be prompted to create a character by selecting a gender and one of the following four races: Almain, Varani, Ljosalfar, or Dokkalfar. They are the same as Civilized Humans, Nomadic Humans, Light Elves, and Dark Elves. They each have one or more racial benefits to their advantage. The following option is to select a god associated with the race in some capacity as a patron (Fire, Water, War, Death, Mischief, Earth, Love, Fate, Wisdom, Order, Justice, and others, or none at all), each of which comes with a unique set of benefits. Both the name and the appearance can be customized, either by selecting a predefined option or by independently adjusting each component.
The battles are quick, and players can access various weapons, which may be employed for close-quarters and long-range assaults. A primary and secondary weapon can be equipped on the character, and additional equipment like helmets, chest plates, and boots can be collected and placed in an inventory. The surface can also provide two different types of weapons. Right next to the health bar is a mana bar used for casting spells. These are spells, but various objects can be assigned to quick slots and accessible through a radial item menu within the game. When engaging in combat, it is often necessary to deal with several foes simultaneously.
Additionally, there are a variety of strikes, such as combinations, blocking, and dodging. It is possible to fate shift a single foe to complete a cinematic finisher during specific scenes. During these identical sequences, there are also quick-time events, allowing the player to build up their fury meter to perform a deadly assault. Players cannot only earn gold but also loot goods. The main character can engage in conversation with non-playable characters. In addition to traditional conversation trees, there are also radial discussion options, which, like the ones in the Mass Effect games, give both choice and consequence.
Gaining levels requires accruing experience through participation in battles. The player has the opportunity to further identify their character by specializing in a variety of abilities at each new level. These skills include alchemy, blacksmithing, lockpicking, commerce, persuasion, and stealth. The progression of skills is broken down into three stages—beginner, intermediate, and master—each of which contains several skill levels. Abilities allow for even further personalization of your character. In addition, experience points can be traded in for powers via a skill tree that is comprised of three primary subcategories: Might, Finesse, and Sorcery. In that order, these are the RPG classes that correspond to the warrior, the rogue, and the mage. After the opening sequences, the game will gradually expand into a broader realm, complete with a primary narrative and several optional sidequests. Going to different towns to acquire new missions and shop for new stuff is possible.
