Stranger, the bounty hunter, must earn moolah (in-game money) by tracking down outlaws with bounties on their heads and apprehending them, bringing them in dead or alive, according to the premise of Oddworld: Stranger’s Wrath. The game employs both third and first-person viewpoints. The Stranger is controlled in the third person when traveling long distances, platform jumping, rope climbing, and melee combat. In contrast, a first-person is similar to first-person shooter games where ranged weapons are used. Enemies can be approached directly, as in an action game, or stealthily, by hiding in long grass out of enemy sight (as indicated by the mini-map) and luring foes away from or toward the player. When enemies are encountered, they can be killed or temporarily knocked down/stunned; in this state, they can be captured, earning more money than if caught dead. When Stranger is captured, he cannot perform any other actions and thus becomes vulnerable. The player has two status bars, one for health and one for stamina. When Stranger takes damage, his health bar depletes; if it completely drains, he dies. His energy depletes when the player performs melee attacks or falls from a great height. While it gradually replenishes itself, it can shake off health-bar damage, healing the player but draining energy faster. Stranger’s crossbow, which is used in first person and uses live ammunition in the form of miniature fictional versions of real creatures as projectiles for varying effects, is one of the game’s main features. Live ammunition can be purchased from game vendors or discovered scattered throughout the game world. When two types of ammo are acquired, they can be assigned to the crossbow at any time for two firing attacks. Nine critters can be used as ammo, including Stunkz, which stuns large groups of enemies, Thudslugs, which act as cannonballs, Boombats, which act as rockets; and Bees, which are fired at foes like an automatic rifle. The game incorporates many role-playing elements, such as earning money for each bounty completed, which can then be spent on upgrades like a crossbow, ammunition, storage, and armor upgrades, and other items like binoculars and knuckle dusters.
