Shadows of the Damned is a third-person shooter in which the player takes control of Garcia Hotspur, a Mexican demon hunter. Even though he is initially powerless to stop Fleming, Lord of the Demons, from kidnapping his fiancée Paula, he decides to follow Fleming into the underworld to retrieve Paula. Fleming has kidnapped Paula. Garcia is helped in his endeavors by his trusty companion Johnson, a skull capable of assuming various guises. In close-quarters combat, it functions as a torch, but it also can convert into a pistol, a shotgun, or an automatic rifle. The blue gems bosses can be collected and used further to improve the three gun types. In addition, there are red gems, which can be utilized to improve not just one’s health but also one’s other powers. Alcohol is another means by which health can be restored.

Darkness is essential in both the gameplay and the puzzles found in the surroundings. Garcia can only remain in dark locations for a limited time before his health deteriorates. You can prevent this by shooting and lighting goat heads on fire, firing off fireworks, or slaying the demons responsible for spreading the darkness. In these competitions, a particular type of light bullet must be utilized. Garcia comes into contact with various individuals, including the Colonel and Christopher, a demi-human hybrid who works as a merchant and sells products to Garcia.

Certain levels have wholly unique gameplay and are structured similarly to minigames; for example, one level is a 2D side-scrolling shooter with a distinct art design from the others. In many instances, the action is exaggerated, and the tone of the dialogue is intentionally comedic.
