Resident Evil 4 is a survival horror, third-person shooter video game developed and published by Capcom. It is also known as Biohazard 4 (4 Baiohazdo F?) in Japan. The sixth main installment in the Resident Evil horror series, the game was first published in North America and Japan for the GameCube in January 2005, then in Europe and Australia in March 2005. The plot of Resident Evil 4 revolves around US government special agent Leon S. Kennedy, tasked with rescuing Ashley Graham, the daughter of the President of the United States, whom a nefarious cult has kidnapped. Leon travels to a lonely rural section of Europe, where he battles swarms of aggressive peasants and deformed beasts and meets the intriguing spy Ada Wong. The game pioneered and popularized video games’ third-person “over-the-shoulder” perspective. Resident Evil 4 was first teased in early December 1999 and underwent a lengthy development period during which four different versions of the game were rejected. Hideki Kamiya directed the first effort after producer Shinji Mikami asked him to make a new chapter in the Resident Evil series for Sony Computer Entertainment’s PlayStation 2.
Nonetheless, it was decided to restart work. The game was supposed to be a GameCube exclusive as part of Capcom Five. However, a PlayStation 2 version was revealed before the GameCube version. Resident Evil 4 was later published in significantly compressed forms on Microsoft Windows, Wii, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, iOS phones, and Zeebo. Resident Evil 4 was released for Android in April 2013, but only for Samsung handsets via Galaxy Apps, although it was previously accessible on the Japanese Google Play. Resident Evil 4 received widespread praise. It won several Game of the Year awards in 2005. It was regarded as a successful cross-platform blockbuster that significantly impacted the growth of the survival horror and third-person shooter genres. It is now considered one of the top video games ever.
