The story of Ghosts takes place in an alternate timeline. It focuses on a war between the United States of America and The Federation, a group of countries in southern America. The conflict between the two groups has been going on for ten years, during which time entire cities have been leveled. As in previous Call of Duty games, the player assumes control of several characters who experience the conflict from various perspectives. However, the story is told primarily from the perspective of a US ‘Ghost’ team, a special forces team specializing in the clandestine and the covert, as they track down a former Ghost that has been captured and brainwashed by the Federation. The player aims to rescue the former Ghost from the Federation’s custody.
Call of Duty: Ghosts, like previous entries in the series, focuses heavily on its online multiplayer component. Standard Call of Duty game modes, such as free for all and team Deathmatch, are included, as well as Ground War, which alternates between Domination and Team Deathmatch, and Blitz, which is analogous to Capture the Flag but requires players to get to portals located at the enemy spawn point to score.
