1893, New Orleans, Louisiana. Rising, a young boy, is exploring the surroundings of his birthplace with a couple of buddies. They come across a charming old house, enter it, and uncover what appears to be a mummy in a coffin. They are unaware that they have just released a massive monster into the universe and that this demon has already possessed one of the lads’ souls… The Apocalypse IV is the first Tengai Maky game set outside Japan, a country similar to Japan. In this game, the United States in the late nineteenth century, like Jipang in previous games, is in another universe filled with demons, Biblical figures, and deliberate clichés (cardboard Native Americans, pop culture references, and so on). The gameplay is mainly based on the standard Japanese RPG design, focusing on the Tengai Maky gaming style. Like in previous games, magic spells must be sought out and gained rather than learned or purchased. The absence of random foes is remarkable; all enemies may be seen strolling about the world area or in the dungeons. Other gameplay additions include special attacks that can be performed as a combo by many party members, as well as earning money by selling combat trophies.
