A great war raged across the land, with many brave knights dying on the battlefield. Eventually, evil forces triumphed, and the once-great kingdom was taken over and corrupted. A strange armored maiden awakens a Wisp on a stormy night. The Wisp holds the memories of the war and is now seeking to bring all the valiant dead back to the world of the living to complete their mission and reclaim the land that was once theirs. Knights in the Nightmare is a tactical role-playing game with some gameplay elements that are unusual for the genre. The game is almost entirely stylus-controlled on the Nintendo DS. It combines active-time turn-based combat, reminiscent of Final Fantasy and real-time strategy games, with bullet-hell shoot ’em-up-like sequences, relying on unconventional requirements for successful battle completion. Once in battle, the player controls the Wisp, which can cause the spirits of fallen heroelivingve in the area to temporarily reincarnate into physical form and fight monsters that have taken over the land. The player can permanently add those warriors to their party by searching for objects that meant something to them while they were alive. The game has a robust character customization system that includes many classes of units, multiple jobs for each unit class, and a soul transplant system that allows the player to transfer part of a character’s attributes into another, more or less well depending on the poured soul’s degree of loyalty, as well as the existence and nature of a relationship between the two characters.
