The handheld version of LEGO Pirates of the Caribbean: The Video Game is similar to the console version, but it has simpler graphics, fewer and smaller levels with their own story and puzzle design, and a unique dueling mechanic. The handheld version, like the console game, allows players to play through the events of all four Pirates of the Caribbean films, with the game released as a tie-in with On Stranger Tides. Cutscenes from the console version are partly reused and re-created to fit the new design. Compared to the console version, the handheld version only has four levels per movie. The actual gameplay follows the standard template of previous LEGO games: players progress through the levels as various characters with varying abilities, whose abilities must be combined to defeat enemies and solve puzzles. Collecting LEGO studs, bricks, and other items, such as medallions and rum bottles, allows you to access bonuses. Pirate duels are a unique feature of the handheld version: when prompted, players must quickly press a button, followed by a quick-time event in which two out of three of the indicated buttons must be hit for a successful strike against the enemy.
