Maki awakens on the floor of an unfamiliar room. Water is dripping from the roof, and her leg is buried beneath the rubble. She has no idea where she is or how she got there; all she knows is that she must find a way out. A bizarre, futuristic facility that appears to have been abandoned after some mysterious calamity. Other survivors are scattered around the structure, but their motives are unknown. Misshitsu no Sacrifice (The Secret Room’s Sacrifice) is a Japanese visual novel incorporating Western adventure-game-style items and logic puzzles. The game is broken into several short chapters, each playing from a different character’s perspective and featuring a handful of puzzles and fully-voiced story scenes. After each chapter, the player must select which character to play next, and the story’s fate is affected by the sequence in which the branches are played. The player is shown still photographs of the scene in “Search Mode.” By clicking on locations of interest, the player can study them, pick up valuable items, and learn more about the environment. To solve riddles, collected things may need to be utilized together or combined. Movement is often restricted to one or a few rooms. The story progresses automatically after puzzles are completed, and all information and materials required for that region are located there.
