It’s a rainy day in a regular Japanese school, except it’s raining rainbow jellies! Ringo Andou, a math genius, is terrified of this bizarre scenario until she is trained in the ways of Puyo by the familiar visage of Arle Nadja. When Arle suffers a mystery headache and vanishes, Ringo embarks on a mission to stop the ongoing Puyo deluge. But the plot intensifies as Ringo uncovers an evil conspiracy after a sinister plot and knows humanity’s existence is at stake. Puyo Puyo 7 differs from previous Puyo Puyo games in that the story mode is told in six acts of varying lengths of episodes, as Ringo Andou (and the friends she meets along the way) travels from place to place, battling Puyo Popper after Puyo popper to prevent a mysterious force from flooding the world with Puyo. There are 19 players, and 5 of them are new (including Ringo).
Conversely, the gameplay is quite similar to Puyo Puyo 15th Anniversary – flood your opponents with Nuisance Puyo throughout 5 (few than 15th Anniversary) various gameplay types and move on to the following location. As is customary, there is a fight mode in which up to four players (eight on the DS edition) compete to see who is the best Puyo popper. In 8-player games, only the Original Puyo Puyo, Puyo Puyo 2, and Fever rules are available, as in the 15th Anniversary.
