Lara Croft Tomb Raider: Anniversary is a graphical remake of the original Tomb Raider with a more advanced graphics engine. It follows the same basic plot, though some cutscenes and much of the dialogue have been expanded or changed in other ways. Locations are the same as in the original version and are accessed in the same order, but have been redesigned with different layouts and mostly completely different puzzles that allow for the implementation of new moves introduced in Lara Croft Tomb Raider: Legend: swinging on Ropes and using a grappling hook at specific points. In this version, puzzles are generally more focused on acrobatics, with ledges prominently as a level design element, requiring combinations of jumping and shimmying across them to access areas. This gameplay almost entirely replaces the original’s key-retrieval and block-pushing puzzles. Combat is similar to the first game, but targeting must be activated manually. Some boss fights have been separated into separate enclosed stages rather than being part of the exploration as in the original version. These fights may contain puzzle-solving elements and frequently necessitate using Lara’s new “adrenaline dodge” ability, which slightly slows time when the opponent charges at her while in an “enraged” state. Some cutscenes necessitate the player’s participation in real-time events.
