Yu-Gi-Oh! GX Tag Force is a card game based on the first season of the Yu-Gi-Oh! GX anime series that follows TCG rules (OCG in Japan). The player takes control of a young boy who enrolls at the Duel Academy as an international student. The game is split into three sections. First, the player must team up with one of the anime’s well-known characters. There are various conversation topics, and each Sunday, a Tag Duel is held with one of the selected partners. Conversations and gifts must be used to build affection until a partner has six hearts. The Tag Force Tournament at the end of July must be won eventually, and this is where the second part begins. A final partner is chosen, and the characters must progress through duels to earn 90 GX Medals and advance to the tournament’s final round. All Shadow Riders (Steven Stars in Japan) who have brainwashed other characters must be defeated in the third part. The protagonist begins with a water deck and gradually gains cards, which can be purchased from the store with DPs. After completing the game, you can restart it with a different character to gain DPs. The duels are fought from a nearly top-down perspective, with turn-based card desk battles.
