Zendoku expands on the premise of the puzzle game Sudoku by including role-playing features. The numerals 1 to 9 are replaced by nine Martial Arts symbols, such as a panda or a dragon, in the game, but the original rules remain. This means the player must still complete a column, row, or 3×3 box where each symbol is used only once. The player can put his talents to the test in Classic Sudoku or Zen-Mode, where he must solve Sudoku problems under time constraints, but the game’s core is Quest-Mode. The player selects one of eight eligible characters at the start of the adventure. Four fight with weapons, and four-fight freehand, but each has a distinct objective, fights differently, and has a separate fortunate emblem. For example, Kingkage is a typical ninja. He practices Ninjutsu, aspires to be a great warrior, and considers the panda his excellent logo. When a choice has been reached. On a 2D world map, the player follows the chosen character’s story, and when combat occurs, the opponents play a game of Sudoku. When a fighter completes a column, row, or 3×3 box, an attack is launched, and obstacles arise on the opponent’s board as an attack icon travels along a rail towards the attacked. If he correctly places his fortunate symbol on the board, his opponent’s attack will be overturned. When a character is set incorrectly, the player loses health, and several cells on the opponent’s grid fill in automatically. The game also has a two-player multiplayer option in which they can either work together to solve a problem or compete against one another in combat.
