Dungeons & Dragons Tactics is a fantasy role-playing game based on the 3.5 Edition core rule set in the Lindesi, a group of kingdoms ruled by a human High King far to the west. Players begin a campaign by choosing or creating a hero, then choosing or creating a group of companions to form the party. You can only have five companions in your party at first, but you can recruit up to eleven companions as the campaign progresses. You can choose from pre-generated characters, create your party of characters, or use the quick-start option to provide you with a set of pre-generated characters. The campaign will end if you start or choose the main hero for the drive dies. You can play as a barbarian, bard, cleric, druid, fighter, monk, paladin, ranger, rogue, sorcerer, wizard, and psionic warrior or psion. Additional party members can be found in the marketplace, such as the Temple, where you can recruit clerics and paladins, and the Mercenary Hall, where you can recruit fighters, barbarians, and psychic warriors. The adventure is played by moving the party icon along the map, where you choose which locations to enter and with whom you may interact. Still, combat is handled in a turn-based tactics fashion, on a grid with five-foot squares, where initiative determines the order in which each character moves. Each character may act according to the 3.5 Edition combat rules during their turn. During their turn, each character, however, has several options from the Action menu. For the appropriate symbols, spells and psionics are also available. For those unfamiliar with the 3.5 Edition rule set, the manual contains a glossary of D&D rules terms, as does the game’s main menu. Wireless multiplayer mode lets you host or join the fun with up to four players, with game modes like Dungeon Bash and Deathmatch Battle, but you can only use pre-generated characters.
