The gameplay of LEGO Indiana Jones 2 for handheld platforms is similar to that of the console version, but the graphics are more straightforward, and the levels are entirely different. Unlike the console game, the handheld version focuses on the fourth Indiana Jones film, with elements from previous films appearing only in mini-game form and as unlockable bonuses. Kingdom of the Crystal Skull’s story is told in three acts of four chapters, with comic-book-style cutscenes interspersed between levels. The levels adhere to the standard LEGO game format: players control multiple characters and can switch between them anytime. Different characters have unique abilities that must be combined to overcome obstacles and solve puzzles. Indy, for example, can use his whip, Marion and other female characters can cross special ledges, and Indy’s son Mutt can cut ropes and climb walls. Collecting LEGO studs, red and gold bricks, and other hidden items, which unlock various bonuses such as additional characters, is a significant part of the game. Finding pages from Indy’s journal allows you to play one of 16 mini-games. The mini-games are based on scenes from all four films, including Raiders of the Lost Ark’s rolling boulder run, Temple of Doom’s mine cart chase, and Last Crusade’s three trials. The player is usually tasked with surviving for a certain amount of time or collecting a certain number of studs before dying or reaching the end of the level.
