Lord of Apocalypse is the sequel to Lord of Arcana, a Monster Hunter-style game. The plot is similar to its predecessor: a human with Arcana power must retrieve the seven fragments of the Arcana Stone to become the Vermillion Lord. The hero must confront and stop a dark entity from devouring worlds. The game also plays similarly to Lord of Arcana. However, there are several differences: new elements are available, there are more customization options for hero creation, enemies can be fought head-on without having to touch them to engage in battle, and dropped items do not need to be manually picked-up; simply moving close to them sends the items into the inventory. There are still Quick Time events from the previous game, but they are not required to defeat the bosses. They are more of a chance to gather rarer materials by destroying some monster parts. The visual style is also less realistic, with some cutscenes even employing cell shading. Mercenaries, one of whom can be programmed to resurrect the hero if necessary, can now be hired to assist the hero in his quest. Like in other hunting games, the various weapons allow for various combo attacks, but magic can be cast in the middle of a combo. Weapons and armor are made from materials collected from multiple enemies and bosses. Various quests are available to help the hero level up and gather resources.
