In the fourth installment in the Atelier Iris series, players take control of a student named Vayne Aurelius at the Al Revis Academy for Alchemy. They complete tasks and quests assigned to them by a university professor. If a player fails to complete these tasks, they will be forced to stay behind, and the story will change depending on who the player works with during these quests. The game still contains RPG-style elements but with new additions. Instead of “leveling up” by defeating enemies, the player can choose how their character develops through a “crafting” system that allows them to modify which attributes they want. Players can also “craft” items and weapons from various objects scattered worldwide. Players will no longer be subjected to random engagements, as is common in many RPGs; instead, they will be able to choose who or what they want to fight, with the ability to see their opponents’ symbols on the board and decide whether or not to engage them. The PSP version includes multiplayer battles, more items that can be synthesized, and a loading time reduction option.
