Although Samurai Warriors: State of War (Geki Sengoku Musou) is a portable version of the original game, it is not a direct conversion of the original game. It is more akin to Dynasty Warriors for the PlayStation Portable, which lends the game more of an “Empire” feel to the gameplay. The primary progression of the game may be broken down into two stages: the Strategy phase and the Action phase. At the beginning of the game, the playing field is divided into different colored squares, and the player is given instructions on maneuvering their character using a turn-based system. The terrain impacts the player’s movement options during this stage. The action phase typically comes next, during which the player gets sixty seconds to take out as many foes as possible before moving on to the next round. These stages can potentially turn the tide of combat in the player’s favor. The player can join one of four primary armies: the Takeda (Western), the Uesugi (Eastern), the Nobunaga, or the single army. The very last stage of the game can only be accessed by completing it with these four different groups. It features cameo appearances from characters in Dynasty Warriors 4. The game includes three gameplay modes: Story mode, Free mode, and VS mode.
