Super Danganronpa 2 is a murder-mystery visual novel with action elements, similar to its predecessor. This Time, the main character is Hajime Hinata, a new student at the prestigious Hope’s Peak Academy. On their first day at the Academy, his class meets Usami, a pink rabbit dressed as a magical girl who introduces herself as the student’s teacher. She whisks the children away to Jabberwock Island, an uninhabited tropical paradise, informs them that they are now on a class trip, and instructs them to make friends and collect hope fragments. But, just as the students begin to adjust to their strange new surroundings, the sadistic Monokuma appears and forces them into a game of Life and death. Once again, the Hope’s Peak students will be able to leave the island only if one can murder a classmate without being discovered. If a murder occurs, a class trial will be held to determine who is responsible. If the murderer is not identified correctly, that student can flee at the expense of everyone else’s lives. If the students find the culprit, they will be brutally executed in an elaborate display. The game is divided into six chapters, further divided into segments called Daily Life and Deadly Life. In Daily Life, the player can converse freely with his classmates by selecting the appropriate options in their dialogue trees. Completing Free Time grants Skill Points, which can be spent on various advantageous abilities during trials. This section of the game also includes Jabberwock Island exploration and scripted scenes. When a murder occurs, Deadly Life begins, and Hajime must search the island for evidence during the Investigation. When all evidence is gathered, the game transitions to the Class Trial, a fully voiced collection of cutscenes and action-oriented minigames. The player must then use reflexes and logic to present the correct evidence, debate with other students, and draw conclusions that will reveal the murderer. After completing the main game, an alternate mode called Island Mode is unlocked. It depicts an alternate universe where Monokuma does not ruin the class trip, and the students collect the hope fragments as planned. In this game mode, Free Time conversations and brand-new scenes for each character may occur.
