Tales of the Heroes: Twin Brave is a Tales spin-off that crosses the franchise’s universes by including playable characters from previous flagship titles. Tales of the Heroes lacks the “Linear Motion Battle System” in most of the series’ games. Instead, the gameplay is similar to that of Dynasty Warriors, in which the player roams a map full of enemies and must fight crowds of them at the same time. The battle system, known as “Aggressive Chain Capacity” (A.CC), entails depleting A.CC points through the use of Artes and regaining these points through free movement, regular attacks, or defensive actions such as guarding. Furthermore, each playable character is paired with another from the same universe; depending on which character is selected, the other is computer-controlled and battles alongside the player. There are five game modes: Story Mode, Free Mode, Tournament Mode, Score Attack Mode, and Extreme Mode. Cress Albane from Phantasia, Stahn Aileron from Destiny, Veigue Lungberg from Rebirth, Chloe Valens from Legendia, and Jude Mathis from Xillia star in Story Mode, which follows a group of chosen characters through either a severe or comical story. There are fifteen stories in total, one for each represented game. Free Mode grants access to all unlocked stages and characters, whereas Tournament grants the same character freedom in exchange for a slew of enemies of varying difficulty. Score Attack pits you against the clock to beat high scores on a stage of your choosing, while Extreme Mode pits you against challenging objectives using pre-selected characters.
