The story of Aragorn during the War of the Ring is narrated by Frodo’s friend, Samwise Gamgee, who recalls the story to entertain his children, who are curious about the adventures of the one known as Strider. However, the hobbits are only visible in cutscenes in this edition, and there is no gameplay in the Shire, which acts as the game hub in the PlayStation 3 and Wii versions. In the game, the player controls Aragorn, who fights orcs, trolls, and other adversaries with his sword and bow. Aragorn can block, use swift or decisive sword attacks, shoot arrows, and charge his bow for more powerful attacks. He may also perform several special moves, many of which are unlocked as the game advances. Defeating enemies restores some health as well as experience points and morale. Using some special activities depletes Aragorn’s confidence. Gaining experience, as in most RPGs, results in leveling up, which improves Aragorn’s attributes and rewards the player with points to spend to master previously obtained special moves. Equipment such as swords and belts can be equipped to strengthen Aragorn’s abilities. This version lacks cooperative play but includes an Arena mode.
