In the face of human technological advancement during the Meiji Restoration, the Japanese youkai were forced to make a difficult choice: 1) To stay as a youkai and guard the earth; 2) To return to the netherworld 3) To relinquish their power and status as youkai to dwell among humans. While some youkai chose otherwise, most of youkai chose to become humans. It wasn’t easy initially, but this youkai could blend in with the human world and live happily beside them over time. Blood, on the other hand, is thicker than water. In times of tremendous tension, the progeny of this youkai manifested the extraordinary talents of their ancestors, often in horrifying and hazardous ways, and were classified as monsters by society. Their ailment was officially designated “Acquired Systemic Special Heredity variety Syndrome,” or “ASSHS.” It was treated as a non-contagious illness, but the general public began to refer to them as Jinyous (half-youkai) nonetheless. Most of these Jinyous were moved to Kamizawa City, an isolated city walled off from the rest of Japan, to keep all the Jinyous together and away from the human population. Those deemed extremely hazardous were taken to a medical facility on an uncharted island off Japan’s coast, where they would be constantly monitored. Takabe Ryouichi was sent to the island when he was five years old. This is a narrative about him and Suzu, his lone friend on the island, fleeing to Kamizawa city to live everyday life. They didn’t expect Suzu to carry a secret that drew unwanted attention…
