After being “assassinated,” Overlord Laharl decided to reduce the salary of the Prinnies. As a Prinny who discovered a magical watch, the player must travel back to discover what occurred. Prinny may do this by possessing several characters from the Disgaea series and following them through the plot. To modify the past, he can Mind Control the character he is inhabiting when that character is faced with a decision. Prinny can use mind control to choose one of three options that will alter the course of events from that moment forward. Prinny’s soul is “saved” at a few points in the game when key events occur or are prevented from occurring, which means that the next time trip will take him back to that precise place to start over. The game’s goal is to restart as many times as possible to prevent Laharl from getting “assassinated” and save the Prinnies’ salary in the future. The plot is told through discussion between the characters and sprite animations. And has numerous various endings based on the player’s choices. The ends are frequently brief advertisements for Disgaea and Nippon Ichi Software titles. The player has access to a timetable of all the events, following every character’s steps; Prinny’s diary, which gives clues about the plot and how to change how the story unfolds; and a database of the characters, places, and other trivia from the Disgaea series, as well as other Nippon Ichi Software games, to follow the story’s progress.
