The Samurai Romance video game Hakuoki: Demon of the Fleeting Blossom is set during the tail end of the Edo period in Japanese history. This was the time in Japan’s history when the Shogunate was losing its grip on power as the nation’s governing authority. The game is one of the few examples of the Japanese subgenre of Otome, which focuses on story-driven romance from the perspective of a female character. It has a gameplay style that is a novel combination of adventure and decision-based elements. Additional elements include a flowing anime-style animation, numerous different endings that are determined by the player’s decisions, and more.
