The game’s title translates roughly as “The Tank’s success story.” The characters are from Japan’s Momoyama period. In the preceding Taik Risshiden IV, a character was chosen from among samurai, ninja, and merchant options. New positions in Taik Risshiden V include a blademaster, a pirate, a medic, a tea master, and a blacksmith, for a total of eight. In the game, the player meets a variety of historical personalities from the period. The game uses the same card system as Taik Risshiden IV but with new professions added. For each edition, the number of playable warlords is increased to 800 for Windows and 860 for the PlayStation 2. Foreign missionaries, monks, and wives of military lords are among the non-combat figures. Pirates and merchants can travel to four overseas bases: Naha (Ryukyu, now part of Japan), Busan (Korea), Ningbo (Ming China), and Luzon (in the Philippines). The military commander images were modified from the manga style of versions III and IV to a graphic novel, or gekiga style, inspired by a title called Nobunaga’s Ambition. While internal issues and training sessions were settled in mini-games in Taik Risshiden IV, unless you changed the option in the PlayStation 2 edition or later, it is possible to opt out and skip those mini-games in this version. However, if the player avoids those mini-games, no technical points are collected on the ability score, and there are times when the player is challenged with the mini-games even if they have chosen to skip them. Players on Windows will acquire different modes based on the number of cards obtained during gameplay, similar to the previous PlayStation 2 version. When all docks are collected, the function to alter warlord data replaces the Power Up Kit featured in other Koei products. When constructing a particular commander or warrior, the player crafts the appearance, such as choosing and arranging face features, props, and clothes, rather than selecting from predefined appearances. This edition allows the player to choose a female warlord for the first time and register and control up to 40 characters besides the primary warlord.
